I don’t know if it’s the technical term, but I’m going with ‘smoosh’! Unless you’re brand new to cardmaking, you’ve probably seen this easy colour smoosh background technique a lot. It’s so easy to do, and is a great way to create a colourful background.
PEONY TRIMMINGS
I knew that I wanted to use the Studio Katia Peony Trimmings stamp, but I didn’t want to colour each of the flowers. That’s how I decided to do the colour smoosh background!
Just choose the colours that you think will work with the image, and go for it!
CARD DETAILS
On your craft mat – I used my Wendy Vecchi Stay-tion – press your chosen ink pads down, to transfer the ink. I chose Distress inks in Picked Raspberry, Seedless Preserves and Shabby Shutters. Next, spray the ink lightly with water. Now, pick up the ink with your piece of white cardstock by smooshing it down onto your craft mat! Move your cardstock around, looking at it to see where you’ve picked up the ink. Repeat the process until you’re happy with the colours, and coverage. Dry your smooshed cardstock with a heat tool – drying both the back & front will help eliminate warping.
Line up your inked cardstock and the Peony Trimmings stamp in your MISTI, or other stamp platform. Cover the stamp with Nocturne ink, and stamp firmly. I like to use my MISTI, to ensure I have a nice crisp image. Next, cut a strip of white cardstock, and stamp the sentiment, from the same stamp set, in Versamark ink. Cover the stamping with Letter It Cranberry embossing powder, and set it with a heat tool. Use a Big Shot with the Peony Trimmings Dies to die cut the sentiment strip.
Now you’re ready to layer all of the pieces together! I used a dusty pink card base, with a panel of darker pink on top. The front panel is attached with fun foam sheet, or you can use foam tape. Attach the sentiment with foam tape to a strip of the same dark pink cardstock, and then attach it to the card front. Finally, finish off your card by adding a few Gina K. Clear Quartz Solid Sequins.
I like how just that little bit of added Shabby Shutters green lightens up the panel.

Such a pretty card, Deb. 💜 I have never seen smooshing, but it makes for a great background. The background is what always trips me up. 😋
